Around Millwall Docks: A Proud Industrial Past

  • Crossharbour DLR Station London E14 9QD (map)

The Millwall Docks and riverside on the Isle of Dogs were once home to world-leading shipbuilding and cargo-handling industries. This waterside walk will help you to discover amidst the modern buildings reminders of those times, taking you past quays where workers loaded and unloaded ships from around the world in docks so well equipped they were called “the Pride of the Port of London,” where undersea communication cables were made that linked continents, to the site by the riverbank where 19th century shipbuilders produced ships for the Tsar of Russia and the King of Denmark, and to the remains of a massive slipway down which slid a ship which for 40 years would remain the largest vessel the world had ever seen.
